
Alan brings to the Bergman Group three decades of experience in journalism, government relations and marketing communications. He began his career as a congressional press secretary and U.S. Senate speechwriter. A magazine writer and editor, he has written for The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, The Chicago Tribune, National Review, The Nation and Vogue. A contributor to The Wall Street Journal since 1994, Alan has also been Adweek's Washington correspondent. On the strength of his work for Adweek, he also contributed articles to Brandweek, Mediaweek and PR Week. From 1993 through 1999, he worked for the public relations division of The Martin Agency in Richmond, Va., before joining Emergence Brand Labs, where he was vice president and director of brand research. Since 2006, he has been the editor of Impact, the monthly publication of the Public Affairs Council in Washington, D.C. In January 2008, his third book, Twilight at Monticello: The Final Years of Thomas Jefferson, was published by Random House and became a Washington Post bestseller.
